無用的設計 | Useless design

here

I don't know if the designer just wanted to do something for the blind or not. If not, this is a absolute useless design. If I want to check how much water is left, I will just open the cover... =.=

每日設計 | Design of the day

here

It is very important to think more for the user, so-called user centered design. If we image how difficult it is to execute daily tasks with just one hand, we will know how great this design is :)

無線電力|Wireless Electricity

Wireless electricity would be the biggest innovation in the next, that what I could certainly say. Now we have almost everything wireless: mouse, internet, earphone, cell phone...and so on. But what really limit out mobility is the "power supply". What ewe can have now is 8 hours max for the Laptop. But with wireless power there will be a real mobility for human being in the future.

網軍的力量| The power of internet against catastrophe

The typhoon Morakot brought more than 2000 mm rain in a day and lead to the biggest floods since 50 years, which damaged Taiwan very hard and took hundred of life. I felt very sad and sorry when I saw the pics in the TV. We have tried to do our best to help these people by spending and shipping them sleeping bag, food, water and so on.

During the rescue actions I have realized how big is the power of internet. The internet user have done their best to collect and deliver all the information they got, way more faster than the any other media. Some people have collected the damage allocation in Taiwan.

Some people have sent the informations where the victims are, what they need and where we could deliver these things to them.

The most important connection to spread these information and reach the people all arround Taiwan is: plurk The speed is so amazing that we could almost say that these kind of mini blog the the core of both side communication, very fast and wide. Though plurk is not so easy to user at beginning, but still way more faster than to write an article like this. I think this is just the start of plurk and twitter. Let's see.

God bless Taiwan.

戴爾 | Dell Adamo

Dell Adamo

I has amazed me that dell can also do something really sexy. very very thin, sophisticated! It indeed cause my interest to have it. (Though I still love my Apple) :P. I think, a designer must be picky and should not be captured by any certain fixed idea.

I want it in the hand so bad to check its details, wether it is really as good as the pics... XD

手勢識別| Gesture recognition

At Cable Labs Summer Conference PrimeSence from Israel has demonstrated a new method to recognize the gesture of the user. They added an infrared projector and a chip into the webcam, which can track the motion of the user.

Gesture recognition has been discussed and developed for a long time by manufacturers and designers (like 3DV System) In the Future, people might not need a remote control with a lot of buttons anymore.

人力能源|Human Powering

This is my first idea about how we encourage people to walk more instead of taking a elevator or escalator. My target is to create an eco-system, in which every one can get some benefit from it.

1. Government:
Give>
due to the environmental issue, they support corporations to build infra-structure in public building, develop software and get energy-firm to get involved in this project.
Take>
The pollution and CO2 can be reduced.

2. Corporations:
Give>
build energy-generating flour into public building, develop software and hardware for consumer.
Take>
they get support from government, sell energy-generating flour to public building and sell software to consumer.

3. Energy Firm:
Give>
they provide a reward account system for consumer and link their system to the public building.
Take>
They get free energy, which generated by the consumers by walking on the flour.

4. Consumer:
Give>
they download software to their cellphone with RFiD, create account at energy-firm. While they choose to walk on the energy-generating flour instead of taking elevator.
Take>
They will get the energy + bonus back into their account from the energy-firm.

special thx: Wenham, he gave me the idea to think of RFiD.

蝴蝶|Butterfly> disposable cutlery

The task was to develop a stable disposable cutlery made of 2mm plastic. The point is to bring function (stable construction) and shape (butterfly-like form) together. The aim is not only to be used, but also value-adding. This cutlery can be used in higher classic place, such like in air-plane and so on.

輕| Light

Just like the name "Fluid Rocker", already tells us the property of the design. It expresses a flexible, light , relax image. I like it very much. A design of Nick Trinka.

Cheers

偷| Thief

With this "Copy", we can actually know, how some Chinese people threat "Knowledge" and "Design". They don't eveb respect themselves. I really really feel very sad as a designer. If the consumers really like these kind of cheap copies, it will be really the end of design.

The Vegetal Chair, designed by the French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, has integrate its beauty with the construction, just like plants. A fake , but a very elegant one :)

觸|Eye for the Blind

It is a very interesting idea. "Eye for the Blind". It is actually a printer, which can print a label for the blind. The user can easily spell the letters and print it out. Though, it might not easy for a blind user to choose the words. I think the separator should be bigger and clear between letters. Otherwise, we don't need such a product, BUT a normal computer and a printer, which can print such a label....

any way, take our responsibility to make the world better.

複x2| Multi Functionalx2

I just found a interesting cloth hanger as below:
It is a product from designer Nicola Enrico Stäubli
She has a light, clean style, not complete stable enough, but still with fun and fresh air.

Actually, the hanger recalls me on famous German designer Konstantin GrcicMay Day a light beyond a light it should be. His style shows a strong character. Different without any unnecessary decoration. A very cool guy!

傳承|A new Design with old spirit

The double-decker old bus is a very important symbol of london. It has created a very strong emotional link to the londoner. A symbol of tradition and the old soul. However, is it necessary a good design? There are 2 aspect:s function and the emotion. If we obverse more closely, we will notice, that not every scenario was considered at that time. It is not so easy to get in and out for the older people, or people with buggy, baggage or using a wheelchair. According to this point, Forster+Partner has developed a new design, which provides an economics environment, at mean time also expresses the tradition and design language of the old bus.

隨|Follower

WOW! $499? an Apple MacBook? No, it is a HP, not an Apple.
I wouldn't say, that the new look of Apple is a great, break through design.
But the greatest of Apple is, they try every time to create something "New", like Unibody ans so on.
So people will memorize it easily and think it is really something "owned" by Apple.

This is a kind of link of meaning and emotion. It is more then a shape or some new features.
Shape can impress the consumer but rather a short time. The other thing is, wether this shape or design
can help building up the Brand. For example, we clearly image how a BMW looks like and who will drive a BMW.

Anayway, an Apple for $499, not bad!

JOKE?

IS THIS A JOKE? :$

I don't think it is a good idea for such complex tasks of a computer.
It is not intuitive, but just seems to be fancy. Innovation is not equal fancy, but solve a problem with a in-conventional way. Anyway, it is just a funny stuff to look at.

型與意|Form and Meaning

It is my habit to search something new or interesting gadgets automatically, no matter where I am. Last time, I rode my bike in the city and found a "Biker" coffee shop (It means, you can park your bike inside of the shop). So I picked up some magazines and turned the page around. As usual, I memorized some, that were cool for me.

I didn't sort these photos right away after arriving home, but weeks later. Something interesting happened, I can't even remember, why I chose these at that moment. For me, most of them are just some boring and normal stuff, while I am writing this article. They were attractive at the first second, but this kind of feeling is very short. It can just be couple days.

So what kind of job as designer we are doing? To create a fancy stuff with a cool looking? To attract the consumer to buy a certain product and regret his decision later? YES, I have to admit, that the purpose of designing a product at some stage is to make the selling better! If the consumer doesn't buy it, they won't know it is a good product. But it is a very low level of design, if we just think how can we create a COSMETIC value. Consumer is not a fool (remember, we are also consumers.) They buy, they use, they know and they realize, what kind of product they have bought.

If we look at the products below, a desktop, a camera, a solar fan, a lamp and a car. The core spirit of some products (desktop, camera, car...) hasn't been change for a decade. After 6 months, they won't be important for the owner any more. People will find a better one to replace them, especially the desktop and camera.

Because they didn't create any deeper meaning to interact with the user. They are just a nice product with skin, not soul. The only one I still like is the lamp. Because it is really an unique design, which links deeply to the emotional level of us. It is really fun to look at it, simple but meaningful. How do you think?
