LandRover LRX Concept

Land Rover LRX Concept.
for me it is a very nice design. they tried to do something new but keep the spirit of land rover.
it looks still very tough, energic, strong but more speedy, sporty now.

the face looks like a animal, which is ready for hunting now. the side-line built a powerful image and movement. it is really cool ;D

UMPC the future?

a concept video of intel UMPC.
would it be the future?

pattern is still a important trend!

pic 1 is a radio, media play, ipod dock...and so on. the functions are not really breakthrough new, so let us just look at the design. a wrap form is still to regconize. but something interesting is like the pic 2, a design from ideo in 2005.

very simple wrap-form with an intensive, random (?) pattern. this kind of design methode begann with the designer marcel wanders with his design-box(maybe some has done it before, but he really did a great job...) .

a simple asia-like form, made of wood, with amazing beautiful patterns! till now, this kind of trend is still growing.

but why pattern? pattern is a sort of structure, shows a strong image and character, just like the grafiti we always see in the undergraound station. the grafic try to transfer massege, hsow its character. it is a very strong eye-catcher.

therfore, in the most case, they appear with a object with simple form. otherwise the form will compete with the pattern...

so try ur own graphic ;D

Let's talk about vw space up

in the name, Space Up, we can read, it is a car designed for a metro-life, where we don't have much room for a bigger car to park, but we do need more room for our stuff. that's the reason why space up is here.

first of all, about the proportion. we can notice that, the "head" of the car is much shorter than what vw has now. or we can say the head is much higher now. inorder to create more space in the car, the main body is not far away from a box. more straight line, more accurate looking.

the icon of this car , i would say, is the part under the logo. they just unified the bumper and the airing and create a small eye-catch area. a simple, well designed solution. so how it reminds me on "vw new beetle".

i know they are very different. but they both have a very simple and clean front part, a very "smooth area". it is not a super extremely high designed fancy car. but proportionally, it is very very nice. i like it.


HOWEVER, space up is very similiar to some japanese metro-cars, that appeared several years ago. short but high. vw didn't create a new vision of it. especially, if we look at the logo, which sits in a lifted area. THIS IS A TYPICAL DESIGN MARK OF TOYOTA. since 3-4 years, toyota makes every car with a logo in a lifted surface as the design icon of toyota.

result: a nice car but not "new"...my opinion

MIT is trying to accuse Frank o.Gehry

Frank o Gehry, one of the greatest Architect, has made numerous famous buildings, such like:

the Medienhafen in düsseldorf,


walt-disney concert hall,


gehry tower in hannover, DZ-Bank in Berlin...etc. all of them have been build in a unique "gehry" style, asymetric shape, flowing surfaces, metallic color. all these make the building just like sculpture.

the stata center of MIT, designed by gehry, was opened in 2004. it was once the mark of the school and successfu project. But why is MIT trying to accuse gehry now?

It has something to do with so-calles the resposibility of an architect (or designer). now, 3 years later, 2007, some details of the building is getting broken, water comes through the roof, the wall has some "gaps". should a architect or designer also be response of the quality of production? it is a moral question. sometimes, we can't control, how the product would be produced. however, we are like the lawyer of the user. we are the only one, who does'nt only care about the look, but the usability. that's the difference between art and design. we deliver a whole paket, we merge every aspect of professions. maybe, we are not direct response for it, but we should give more effort and concern about it.

Masi Oka is th enew ambassador of OLPC

OLPC (one laptop per child) is a project, try to help children in the case of education and so on.
they tend to put out an easy, intuitive used laptop with just 100 dollor.

This guy MASI OKA , from the hit v-series "HEROES" is the new ambassador of OLPC.
in the series, he is playing a guy, who lives in his own fantacy world, dreams to be a hero. a child-like adult, very honest and with a real heart.

i think he is a right guy to do this job ;D

with Hadid, they made this not "interesting" style (well, a hadid building is never usual!).

an information search-engine is not the soul of google.
Google is actually an innovation engine.

the most important of a search engine is to create a positive user experience, provide a very high speed and useful (what is really needed) information.

but what is innovation? where is it from?
innovation should base on the user need
surely, the user doesn't really know what they want, BUT they might know what knid of problem they have. so let's start it from the "problems".

Sony Ericsson bluetooth watch MBW 150

Sony Ericsson TimeMaster line is a serie of bluetooth watch, which works as a remote, receiver, coordinator with the "walkman phone". (caution! only walkman phone!)

Moto Labs Multi-Touch screen

Moto Labs a very interesting group about interaction design/prototyping.
here they just show, how they make thier multi-touch screen work:
inorder to use this equipment under normal light, they DIDN'T use camera as tracing tool (i still havn't find out, how the trace the finger..maybe touch-sensor? or pressure sensor?)

in the link, we can also find the simulation. it works very fluently and quick.
multi-touch is the most intuitive interface till now.
it aprovides a way, that everyone, who even doesn't have experience with pc, can use/deal with it easily. it is happening NOW.

i think the next issue would be:
how can we use this technology to work on way more complicated tasks, such like text typing, graphic and 3d-modelling, which need a very precise handling. it is extreme interesting to see how far it will go ;D
and maybe i will jump into such kine of projects later...

a japanese product designer. his style is tend to minimalism, just like the objects he designed,
are alle very simple with a single idea and clean design language.

but if we image how these objects works, we would say: it is amazing and philosophical.

there were some interesting set up of interaction stuff about music, illution ans so on.
god damn cool. especially, i like the virtuel chords very much.
it is simple, easy idea, but fun to play with it.

the best car-brand for design in 2007

NOW, i am going to nominate the best car-design award in 2007 XD:

HANG CAR DESIGN AWARD 2007:

my friends know that, i am an AUDI fan.
i like the high-quality, sporty, discreet and perfect proportion of AUDI.
AUDI for me is absolute the design-guru since end 90'.

BUT if we talk about these 2 years (2006, 2007), my answeer would be different.

CITROEN!!!

citroen is my personal winer in design.
during these 2 years citroen has made a huge improvement in case of it's design icon.

first of all:
they extend it's logo as the most important design element on the front.
it mens, they didn't change much, but strengthen spirit of the brand!
they have a face with an strong indentity, just like bmw, mercedes, and sure, audi.

second, not only the logo, but also the other elements, especially the lights and grill and so on. they are trying to build cars more generous, more characterized. like a creature (or an automatic robot).

it is iconic now!

a good news...

a clean way to create electricity...

the biggiste problem of mobility for me is not the internet signal, but the electricity.
it limits how long u can use ur mobile device on the way.

now the MIT, schcool of achitecture and planning, just introduced a way to create electricity in a nature and simple way : through the human movement.

this project called "crowd farm"

it means, through continuous movement of crowd to produce the eletricity. here is an example:
there are thousend, millions of people walking through / at the central station in NYC. if we can transform this huge amount of movement into electricity, it can be the solution of the energy short or wireless energy for the future.

what they have done is: they made every piece of flagging moveable. every step of human will move the flagging and create a certain energy. it is little, but with continuous thousands of steps, it is a real feasible solution.

well, let's talk about the new iPods...

i think every body has sure viewed the new line of ipod's.
for me the biggest change is the ipod nano, so let's start it with ipod nano.

what didn't change is, the colorful, joyful and mobil image.
However what i am surprised about is the proportion, it is much wider now.
it looks just fat and short now. many people have critized the point hard...
i think there are 2 reasons why they did it:

1. because of the bigger display. the features of nano have been definately improved now. we can even view movies and videos. it is a big sell point to attract buyers. just like u buy an ipod nano, but get an ipod video.


2. if u ever have an ipod nano in the hand, u will notice that, it seems much thiner now. (because of the finder edge). u know what, it reminds me on the nokia spot N95



the new nano is just like a small disk of stone, that u pick up and throw on the river. it is not elegant, but it is neat, like something u always carry in ur pocket.

however, the image is similar with the creative zen stoone:


a neat, a little bit square, a stone-like thing. though the production quality is much better than creative, the nano didn't give me a "WOW" in this case. it can be a well sold little thing, but not "the one".

i guess, the ipod nano might just a short term product for the next big step... maybe it is just a trial of apple to see what happens. if it fails, it won't ruin the empire. if it success, great!

so my short opinion:

it is neat, nice to have in the hand, but it is not a "WOW"

the first demo of multi-touch tablet PC

here is the first demo (prototype) of multi-touch tabletPC by Jazz Mutant.
it is a well-"heard" technology now.
interesting is: he can also use a stylus to control it. no bad ;P

about 3 weeks ago, i was invited to a friend's wedding in austria.
it was really as beautiful as a dream... ;D
i wish, i can have a similiar one ;P

Let's talk about iMac: style, details and then?

the new iMac


at the first sight, the rough shape havn't been changed a lot.
but the whole image has become very different.
the old one

is home-like, clean, humanlity, warm...
but the new one is cool, high-end, extrem-minimalism.
we can say, it is a mix of G5 and the old iMac.
it is a level-up of the old iMac. every-thing is integrated now, in a best way.

what interesting is, iMac is actually the low range product of apple desktop.
it means, the next G5 should be much more high-end than iMac now...
i am wondering now (ha...but i am nor doubting their design ability...)

weather it is the right direction for the home user? i am not sure.
it just like a plasma-TV. very high-end, though for home user.
maybe, the home user just want to have a higher end, than they do.

same with the G5, i guess, the IT-Giant Foxconn has produced the iMac for apple.
all details are amazing resolved (really amating!)
the airing is just like G5.

the most interesting is, the black part:
silver and black, appear for the first time in apple computer.
but not first in apple product.
mabe it is inspired by ipod or iphone. (opinion by weham, designer ASUS)

and u can notice that, front black part makes the frame thiner!
that's the purpose, why they need a big black area there.

and sure, the material-color-combination makes the design more high-end.

will they have a different color of iMac for home user?
or a MacBook in silver and black? let's wait and see!
